I ordered from Flavors of East Africa on DoorDash and got the spicy jerk chicken plate with collard greens and rice. The collard greens were just okay, but the jerk chicken stole the show! I don't think I've ever had jerk chicken off the bone before, but it was a game changer. The boneless cut allowed the sauce to completely coat the chicken, making every bite juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. The sauce was spicy in the best way--not just heat for the sake of heat, but a rich, flavorful spice. This was easily some of the best jerk chicken I've had in San Diego and I'll definitely be ordering again! Highly recommend for anyone who loves bold, authentic flavors.

Amazing food! Nevaeh was the nicest waitress I think I ever had. Huge portions. I could only eat half of my meal. The veggie dishes were fantastic. Next time I'm not ordering any meat dishes, although my chicken curry was scrumptious. Injera and chapati were also on point. Parking in this area is very, very tough. Prepare to drive around and walk a few blocks. Plates/bowl are $16 to $24, but big portions. Cone for lunch if you want to save money. Same portion for $7 off. Mango Africa iced tea was deliciously exotic. Minimal sweetener. I used a Restaurant.com certificate for $15 off a minimum $30 check. Paid $7 for the certificate. Afro background music and pleasant African decor. Booths and 2 top tables that are together to be able to seat a group up to 18 people. Thank you, Nevaeh. We'll be back to see you again soon.

The fufu seemed like it was old, it was kinda bland and hard but I'm not sure what its supposed to taste like. Injera tasted interestingly sour, didn't like it as much as the chapati bread. Jerk chicken and goat curry were both really good, lots of flavor. I would get the ugali with curry or any other creamy soupy dish you can dip it in. Jerk chicken (8.5/10) Goat curry (8/10) Server was nice and it was not too crowded when we went around 8pm on a saturday

I actually stumbled upon this place by pure luck, and I am so glad I decided to try it out! This was my first experience with East African cuisine and I was heavily impressed by the food. We came in on a week night closer to closing time, and it was surprisingly completely empty. We ordered the jerk chicken and curry chicken plates with coconut rice and plantains or greens. The food came out very quickly. Both plates were so delicious. I loved the flavor of their curry, and I think it paired very well with the greens and chicken. For the jerk chicken, we decided to make it a bit spicy, so it had a hint of spice. The sauce was more so on the sweeter side. Nonetheless, very delicious and savory. Overall, I would definitely return to Flavors of East Africa! The service was great, and their portion sizes are pretty huge.

Fantastic flavors and great portions!!! A great place to come with a larger group so you get to try more! For the three of us, we were FULL just sharing the goat curry and oxtail (with leftovers to take home). The plantains were just perfect. I'm hoping to go back with more people to try even more sides and appetizers. The drinks are full of flavor (from the spicy gingery juices to the warm teas). Service was attentive and helpful. So glad to have a spot like this in San Diego. Packed with flavor and love!

Good food for a good price! I came during Thanksgiving day lunchtime and had a large lunch special ($20) which comes with 4 entree options and a carb - more than enough food for two people. In the lunch special, I had the saffron rice, plantains, sweet jerk chicken, curry chicken, and eggplant. Saffron rice was a good choice to complement the saucy dishes. Curry chicken, plantains, and eggplants were also very good. The sweet jerk chicken was nicely grilled, but the sauce was too sweet for my liking. I tried some of my friend's spicy jerk chicken, and I found that much better balanced. I also ordered the hibiscus ginger drink which was very gingery - perfect for ginger lovers. The ulagi I ordered on the side ($4) was very similar to Nigerian fufu - just made with corn instead of cassava. Spicy beef samosa was decent - it has a thinner wrapper compared to Ethiopian samosas. Service was good, the waiter checked in several times. The dining area was dim, and they had presumably Kenyan music playing alongside some wildlife on the TV. Parking might be a hassle, but we were able to find street parking right in front of the restaurant. All things considered, I'd return! Just a tad too salty, but that could be my fault in ordering mostly saucy items.

Lucky San Diego, you can eat at this delightful restaurant every day! I ordered the three item veggie plate with African bread instead of injera and took my server's good advice by choosing the sticky sweet plantains, the creamy stewed lentils which were savory, rich and perfectly seasoned with mild curry flavors and the greens, which was my favorite dish, a little smoky, tart with a hint of mustard, crunchy and light. Five stars! My family member ordered the jerk chicken which comes without bones and your choice of bread and sides. Five stars! Parking is tough in this area, but it's a nice walk from the residential area to the south where there is free street parking. For my friends with wheelchairs, there are nice big tables inside and outside which can accommodate wheelchairs nicely! If you have never tried African food before, give this place a try. You wil be given good advice on what to order and a great meal no matter what you order. Many thanks to my African sisters who helped me navigate this incredible and nutritious meal just after a surgery. The service, food, decor, and value here each deserve five stars. I want to dine here every day. Lucky you! You can! ******

While it can get busy with long lines and crowds, the line moves quickly, and the staff is always friendly. They have different combo options ranging in price. I recommend the Large Chicken Combo which is large to last me for 2 meals for $19. ---- Overall: Unique, flavorful food, fast and friendly service, delicious and convenient

My BFF and I have enjoyed Flavors of East Africa for almost a decade now. We first found out about them when they came to our college campus, then when they were at local farmers' markets in San Diego. In recent years, we've only done takeout, but the food still stands the test of time. Everything is so flavorful and comforting with extremely generous portions. And staff are always so friendly whenever we call. Our favorites are the jerk chicken, lamb curry and birigayna (stewed eggplant). Also love the ugali and coconut rice. Can't wait to try more dishes on our next visit.

4 is the magic number. I got lucky and pulled into the last of the 4 parking spots in front. Friendly person in charge welcomed me in. Cool African artifacts. Lots of tempting choices. I chose the oxtail. Plantains were soft and sweet. Maggie loved them. Fries were crispy and had tasty fried potato flavor. Chapati was like a tortilla and I liked the mild flour tortilla like flavor. Oxtail was tender and full of beefy flavor. Loved the sauce and the stuff used to season the oxtail. The rich flavors remind me of the oxtail at Havana Grill. This is one of the best preparations of oxtail I've had. 2nd visit. Steak was well done and hard to cut with a butter knife. It was dry and the texture was rough. The flavor was beefy with just the right amount of salt. I think it was top sirloin steak. My preference is for ribeye cooked medium. Beef short ribs were tender and moist. Loved the flavor. There was a sauce on it which was delicious in small quantities. Staff was very nice and answered a bunch of questions I had.
